Genesis / 32X / SCD - Sonic the Hedgehog 3 - Launch Base Zone Act 1 - The #1 source for video game sprites on the internet!
Welcome back to Saturday Soundtracks for 2016, a look at video game music that I enjoy. This next instalment is Sonic 3, a game so large it was split into two separate titles via the unusual Sonic & Knuckles pass through cartridge, but whose soundtrack had an interesting history of its own related to pop King Michael Jackson's alleged aborted involvement in composing the soundtrack. As for track itself, Launch Base Zone is a lovely, glitchy bit of hip hop with lots of vocal yells and that deep, gnarly FM bassline to underpin the track. When taken in the context of the rest of the game, the track's rather minimal approach helps build a sense of foreboding when going through the last stage of Sonic 3 ahead of the boss fight or in S&K, the launch of the Death Egg.This is just one side of the soundtrack that works well; the entire soundtrack is leaps and bounds over its predecessor in style and substance and serves to show how developers and musicians learn how to coax more out of a system as time goes on.Source.
